I guess we have talked enough about sustainability on our planet, but how about in space? Perhaps this is a topic that we may not think about when it comes to sustainability as space exploration is a relatively new aspect of humanity, which has just been introduced to us towards the end to the last century. However, as humans start to explore space and steadily become multi-planetary species, our preservation efforts of our collective future home will become more and more vital. So let's dive into this topic, shall we?
Space waste refers to the unused man-made object in space that is simply floating around. This can often be satellites, parts of space crafts, and missing equipments. Maybe you are still confused how floating parts can be harmful to space, well, here is the problem: collision between space debris and new launches can cause explosions, especially when they are not being located properly. This adds up to the cost of each launch, which can result in inefficient missions. Other issues such as shortening of a satellite's lifespan can also arise due to floating pieces like solar panels and other parts that may be functional to the satellites but are missing. Space debris start to appear primarily when satellites reach their lifespan and defunct in space. Space companies usually don't fetch them back as that would be costly and also requires extensive efforts. Guidelines have also been set to regulate space waste, however, because the structure and components of every nation's spacecrafts are made up of different types of materials, it is hard to classify the types of space waste produced, which makes it almost impossible to implement certain regulations and policies.
This issue is not new to the world, but more effective and straight-forward actions are required to make our environment a better one for the next generations to come. So what are your thoughts on resolving space waste?
